Tune the Environment, Not the Person: A 3-Step Framework That Makes ABA Finally Make Sense

I understand how overwhelming ABA jargon can feel, so I’ve broken one core concept from the Positive Systems Approach into a simple, usable framework you can apply today. Observe. Hypothesize. Test an environmental change.

Think of it like tuning a radio: first you listen, then you guess which dial needs adjustment, and finally you turn it slightly to see if the signal clears. Why this matters: PSA adapts ABA into a strengths-based, system-wide model that teaches coping skills and reshapes environments—so you’re not just managing behavior, you’re supporting growth.

Quick evidence: small, targeted environmental adjustments plus skill-teaching consistently reduce challenging episodes and boost independence.

Use this three-step carousel or thread to guide parents and professionals through a practical mental model that demystifies ABA and centres positive change.

A Practical Checklist + Scripts (Positive Systems Approach)

🔍 1. OBSERVE

Goal: Understand what’s actually happening—without judgment.

✅ Checklist

  • ☐ What exactly is the behaviour? (be specific, observable)

  • ☐ When does it happen? (time of day, transitions, demands)

  • ☐ Where does it happen? (settings, environments)

  • ☐ Who is present?

  • ☐ What happens right before? (triggers/antecedents)

  • ☐ What happens after? (responses, outcomes)

  • ☐ What might the person be experiencing? (fatigue, confusion, overwhelm)

  • ☐ What’s already working well?

💬 Sample Scripts

Use these to guide thinking or conversations:

  • “Let’s slow this down—what did we actually see happen?”

  • “When is this easiest for them? What’s different then?”

  • “What tends to happen right before this starts?”

  • “What might this behaviour be communicating?”

  • “Where are the moments things go well?”

💡 2. HYPOTHESIZE

Goal: Make a best guess about what’s driving the behaviour—and what might help.

✅ Checklist

  • ☐ What function might this behaviour serve?

(escape, access, sensory, attention, predictability, etc.)

  • ☐ What environmental factor might be contributing?

    • Task difficulty?

    • Unclear expectations?

    • Sensory overload?

    • Lack of choice/control?

  • ☐ What skill might be missing?

  • ☐ What small change could reduce the barrier?

  • ☐ Can I test one change at a time?

💬 Sample Scripts

  • “Based on what we saw, I wonder if this is happening because…”

  • “Could this be their way of avoiding something that feels too hard or unclear?”

  • “What if we adjusted the environment instead of expecting them to adapt?”

  • “What’s one small change we could try that might make this easier?”

  • “If this worked, what would we expect to see instead?”

🔄 3. TEST AN ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE

Goal: Try a small, intentional change—and see what happens.

✅ Checklist

  • ☐ Choose ONE small change (not multiple at once)

  • ☐ Define what success would look like

  • ☐ Implement consistently (same context if possible)

  • ☐ Observe what changes (frequency, intensity, engagement)

  • ☐ Did things improve, stay the same, or worsen?

  • ☐ Keep, adjust, or try a new hypothesis

💬 Sample Scripts

  • “Let’s try this one small adjustment and see what happens.”

  • “We’re not looking for perfection—just improvement.”

  • “Did the situation feel easier, harder, or the same?”

  • “What changed after we made that adjustment?”

  • “Should we keep this, tweak it, or try something else?”

🔁 Putting It All Together

  • 👀 Observe: What’s happening?

  • 💡 Hypothesize: Why might it be happening?

  • 🔧 Test: What small change can we try?

➡️ Repeat, refine, and build on what works.

🌱 “We’re not trying to ‘fix’ behaviour—we’re learning how to better support the person by adjusting the environment and building skills.”
